Hi folks, I am Mathieu Goessens, a Mozilla contributor from the french community. I am doing some sysadmin, advocacy/community work etc. On my spare time i am also DJ and usually do some live streaming of the events I am implicated in.
As you may know, streaming setups are usually done using specialized protocols some of them having some open source implementations, like icecast [1] that is the main open source solution. Icecast based setups rely on a very simple design: one source client, sending content to one icecast server, which can be contacted by users for listening (/viewing) the stream using HTTP. Considering the adoption of webRTC we recently put our attention on it and were trying to figure a way to leverage webRTC for allowing anybody to setup a streaming source, using any browser, without relying on any special software. As webRTC and icecast/shoutcast use differents protocols and messages formats, our idea was to create a gateway that could translate webRTC streams into an icecast usable format. Using the same model we also figured that we could write an webRTC to Mubble [2] gateway. Mubble is one of the most used voice chat client, mostly designed for online gaming. As firefox is going to be more and more used as a gaming platform we thought it may be interesting to allow it to also handle the chat part while still being compatible with existing clients and servers. Thus, We are contacting you today, because we found a student that want to work on this project and we are looking for somebody for the media/webRTC team to help us to mentor her for the next 2 months. Would somebody being interested ? Thanks in advance, Best, PS: i am on #[email protected] ; pseudo: geb [1] www.icecast.org [2] mumble.sf.net -- Mathieu Goessens IT consultant.
