We just got official word that the NETVC BoF ("Birds-of-a-Feather") session has been approved for the upcoming March IETF meeting in Dallas. This is an important step in developing an internet-focused realtime video codec with favorable (and ideally royalty-free) licensing terms.

I'll note that this isn't the formation of a working group to actually perform the work of developing a codec and publishing the specifications. In the IETF process, holding a face-to-face BoF session is designed to let the IETF community comment on the proposed charter for a working group before it is formed, and to determine whether forming a new working group is warranted.

That said, I am very optimistic about the probable outcome of the BoF resulting in a new video codec working group.

I'd like to extend a special thanks to the entire Daala team; their work has been critical in laying the foundation for the standards work that will follow, and this BoF would never have happened without them. I'd like to thank Tim Terriberry and Jack Moffitt in particular for doing all of the heavy lifting of driving the IETF process.

I will be co-chairing the BoF. Feel free to reach out to me with any process questions you may have.

A description of the BoF is here: http://trac.tools.ietf.org/bof/trac/wiki#NETVC The proposed working group charter that will be discussed is here: https://daala.etherpad.mozilla.org/video-codec-charter
