Its been a while so i'll refresh your memory rather
than chase down the thread . i had a strange problem
with a nvidia splash screen that wouldnt go away when
the glx driver was enabled rendering the desktop
unusable with the nv6629 ver. in the later 2.6.xx
Mepis releases . the ECS N2U400-A board with a
supposedly nvidia gforce FX4000 chipset just would not
work with 3D even compiling the driver straight from
nvidia , a real pita !
while trying diffrent hardware to pin down the
absoloutely infuriating lack of performance and the
video problem i dropped a screwdriver making it a
coaster that led to this bit of interesting info . not
being positive the board was dead i pulled a K7T266
PRO2-A MSI backup board from the closet to test the
rest of the hardware . every thing goes well till we
get to installing the video card driver and my
favorite install disk that strips all previous drivers
to make for a clean setup says install halted no
nvidia chips found . naturally im thinkin what the
hell is this ?? about that time the light comes on ,
could it have been the video card causing the problem
all along ? you betcha !! i skip the driver install
and start installing Mepis 3.3 test3 . right from the
start there's a problem with partitions Mepis wont let
me pick a drive it says none in the dropdown box with
no other choices . now what ?? i know there are
partitions available , i made four near 20 gig with a
600 meg spot for swap with maxiblast when i started
with this new 60 gig maxtor drive .
apparrently linux sees something with this it
doesnt like , possibly explaining some of the strange
posts i've read on the forum . to get around this and
save time i use a man. 9.1 install disk to partition &
format the drive , then Mepis shows the part. and we
go on with the install , and on with the install till
i leave it running and go to bed . next morning it
says there was an error in OO that will probably be
repaired later or to that effect . every thing seems
ok so i click enable the nvidia driver in control
center it compiles the glx driver & installs it and
tells me to reboot to finish the install . Yep ,
problem back nothing but nvidia splash screen ,
desktop unusable . at this point im wondering if i got
a bad burn & a fuzzed install so i install 3.3test2
that works well on other box with no problems to test
disk etc. with same results .
next step is reburn at half speed and reinstall SM
3.3 test3 , it goes faster this time so the disk might
have had a bad spot but video results are the same ,
unusable splash screen . now we can test another card
to see if hunch is correct and it IS , the unworkable
video system now works with a known friendly nvidia
card . with no changes to the install, just shut it
down & replaced the card . goes to show ya ya never
know with with these buggers till you spend days
testing . others may be aware of this inconsistency
with nvidia cards but its a new one on me !
maybe this will save some a real pita though . the
distributor-maker of this card is BFG tech. inc , its
called an asylum , probably cause it will drive you
nuts screwin with it !
if there's any other info needed in connection with
this problem its easily reproducable , in fact i would
gladly donate it to some one with the expertise to dig
out a more knowledgable explanation of the malady .

regards jim
