Passwords are encrypted with a Fix 3DES key stored in the key3.db. That key is wrapped with a PBE (your master password). You can access this key from an application using NSS's SDR interface (Secret Decoder Ring). Example applications that can read and decode these passwords can be find in mozilla/security/nss/cmd/ under sdrtest and pwdecrypt, both progams can decrypt firefox stored passwords.
