We (the Mozilla SysAdmins) are working on several ways to combat the spam, but disabling the news->mail gateway isn't the right solution to this problem and should not have been done. We can put Google Groups into read-only mode for a while if that helps, but we really just need to find a way to filter incoming newsgroup posts from Google Groups for spam. We'll try to quickly figure out a solution (or at least a stop-gap) to this very annoying problem, as we know it affects the ability to just get work done.
