There's a new development. It turns out that Fx apparently does not use quite the same domain-name resolution as the OS, or at least the results are not identical. Fx resolves certain domain names that the OS cannot, and vice-versa. See http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=2684602#2684602 and the previous message.
This is a little speculative, but it raises the possibility that maybe other browsers do handle domain-name resolution differently. And they could be correct that other browsers work better with a flaky DNS. Maybe there is an actual Firefox bug here. I'll leave it in the hands of you capable network guys, wherever you are.
