If say, I want to get it in to more than one branch, would I have to submit 
multiple patches?

Only if your trunk patch doesn't apply to the tip of the branch you
want to get it landed on. You are of course expected to apply it,
build the branch build and test it.

Note, that it's not guaranteed a branch patch will be accepted even if
a trunk version of it was. There's a list of approval criteria for
branch somewhere.
