Theoretically the security issues for plugins (mime handlers) and 
extensions in Firefox on the one hand and IE ActiveX are similar. In 
practice the vast majority of plugins are by reputable entities for a 
few well known mime types while extensions are for purposes outside of a 
particular web sites goals. ActiveX blurs these categories more and, 
perhaps only because the IE market was bigger and less tech savvy, some 
folks took advantage.

I will reiterate the previous replies: minimize your C++, the Javascript 
  XPCOM model is powerful and much simpler.
