notes from apps eng meeting, 2012-05-12

** Google Mobile Web Compatibility - Starting to Get Traction in Partner
Communication
google we want to get because they're so big
we've had more success with facebook and twitter
        google has been webkit-heavy
effort jason talking about someone from mozilla talking to
representatives over at google

many of them are user-agent sniffing problems
        in some cases it's simple
youtube will serve the right site except for the ua
        it depends, site by site

** Questions and Concerns **

Myk: how can we move all these tasks away from "[at risk]" to "[on track]" ?

Anant: for AITC client, the Identity module is the big risk
    - native, proper implementation is at risk
    - short-term implementation is done but a little hacky
    - proposal: Anant to meet up with Gavin

Toby: what about moving HSM machines, what is the target date?
Bill and Todd: Need this for June 21

Jason: what's the story for B2G support for Apps?
What's been implemented so far? All apps currently on b2g are open web apps
    What's been tested?
    Launch into chromeless window? Works
    Install into home screen? Works
    Marketplace App for B2G?

Todd: for Basecamp we need client side pieces by June 5; we need marketplace to
look great at 320x480

Q: which version of persona.org to use for testing?
https://persona-dev.mozillalabs.com/

Q: what's the deal with localization / internationalization for WebRT desktop?
A: we should use the same localization process as moz-central does, generally

Q: where are AITC docs? what about testing?
A: see https://etherpad.mozilla.org/aitc-manual-testing

Q: are we going to get chromeless apps on fennec? we were living with
apps-in-a-tab earlier
A: Wes is working on chromeless web apps for fennec!
A: we're looking at building a separate app in the distro that launches without
chrome; hard to run both it and Fennec at the same time
A: ON TRACK to land in FF15

Q: can we sync up with crashkill folks to get progress on breakpad and socorro
integration for WebRT desktop
A: sure!
Q: who should do it?
A: myk will ask Kairo

Q: what status of offline / AppCache mode (see bug 749029) is acceptable for
WebRT?
A: pre-emptive loading of AppCache AT RISK for FF15; bug 749029 is a BLOCKER
for FF15
A: Johnny says, prefilling AppCache in bug 753990 has patch with r-; we will
not have scheduled updates for installed Applications

Q: can we get performance telemetry (esp. startup time) hooked up to WebRT (see
bug 753925)
A: Larwence says investigation is underway

Q: how will / should telemetry data for webapps show up in the server?
A: not decided; there are privacy concerns

** ROUNDTABLE **

Q: linux contributor outreach for WebRT?
A: start by providing marco lots of support and encouragement; timely reviews,
answer questions, etc
A: open source folks in argentina and brazil are desktop linux people
