Someone suggested making the 1.4 split code periodically flush the !METADATA
table. This would be a great little change to speedup 1.4, however the user
calling split may not have permission to flush !METADATA.
I did not merge the 1.5 changes to 1.4 out of fear of introducing bugs. If
anyone it interested in merging to 1.4 let me know.
