Bear with me as I lay out what I'm thinking. Using the method defined here, http://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/MountableHDFS I'm thinking about mounting my HDFS in order to backup the contents to a remote file system. Something along the lines of mount the remote file system, mount fuse-dfs locally and then begin a tarball-gzip of Hadoop data, then unmount both.
