I'll take a look at it and put some more thought into it today at some point.
One thing to note is that mutex is synchronizable so you could clean up the
code by using synchronize( someMutex ) { }
One thing that I'm considering is that the read should have returned when it
was closed prior to joining the thread but the read logic to detect this looks
like its not right and is probably part of the problem.
