Yes i agree. I mentioned imap in particular since users usually expect that the
messages stay on the server (since that is the main motivation for using imap
instead of pop3).
If the defaults are changed for all protocols, it should be accompanied with a
a paragraph in the documentation that clearly states the delete / read
behaviour. (wich is not the expected behaviour for pop3...)
