some progress made finally after being stuck in the weeds on
* implicit views in Jersey not really working with explicit @GET methods
returning JAXB objects for XML/JSON representations so switching tack to
explicit views
* hit the [horrid surefire bug|http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/SUREFIRE-459]
which took ages to figure out why things worked fine in _'mvn jetty:run'_ but
not in _'mvn test'_
