After some research it seems as though this patch should be ok. The main
difference between the two is that in the FD sync case the metadata is
rewritten on each call where in the FileChannel case the metadata for the file
is only rewritten as needed. This addresses some issue in performance that
have cropped up in later releases or REHL where fixes to ensure that the
metadata is modified correctly have reduced overall performance of the fsync
call.
