Yea performance would have to be a consideration for autocompleting all usernames. We do have [#8293] with the idea of suggesting other people who have participated on the thread already.

Most likely this is due to the performance of the search. But actually this limits the use for everything, which is public. Especially it lowers the use in the Discussion Tool. Because there everyone wants to mention everyone else.
