This PR reflects effort on 2 different local branches that were forked before moving to apache (hence the rel. small commits). The first commit in this branch is a pretty big one as it reflects some stuff that were merged on the old Amaterasu repo, but the rebase to the new repo was to complicated, so we just wrote the changes on a new branch.
