Yep, as you say, it only happens on files that were generated by the same VM.  
You can use the CVS version of the Delete task which includes a call to 
System.gc() to get around this problem.  We're still not 100% sure that it is a 
VM bug and not the result of a bug elsewhere.  Did you say these were created 
using the <record> task?  For good measure, if you're using a VM other than a 
Sun-supplied one, please let us know.
