Having spent a week thinking over the issues raised in this discussion:
http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=31744 I have come to the conclusion that the best place to start would be creating a connection as a referenceable object. I'm trying to find a model to look at so that I can better understand the internal workings of this structure. Looking over the classes in the o.a.t.a.types package tree I don't see any of them that stands out as being in any way a close analog of the FTP connection in terms of functionality or lifecycle.
