I believe this is by design. Read the documentation carefully. It says...
"onerror  - Action to perform when statement fails: continue, stop, abort  -  
No, default "abort"

In the case of a failed login, the statement is never executed. The onerror 
attribute is meant to control what happens when the statement fails.

Perhaps you should submit an enhancement request for a new attribute 
called "onloginerror" that handles login similar to the way onerror handles sql 
statements.
