Hi Martin, I forgot to mention, a year and a half ago, that I did a lot of work to improve checkout to use cache agents and bulk inserts however the changes have not been approved by the ant community there are a few outstanding bugs see https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=46326 for more details.
I haven't fix these bug as I didn't realise that they had been Tested 6 months after I contributed the code plus internally the code worked and we didn't discover these bugs as we were not stress testing the fixes.
