I have tried this, but as the routine gets called with each key press,
rapid typing can cause text to appear in unexpected places (as the
ViewCursor although hidden has been shifted) and for some reason that I
can't fathom backspace and Del don't work.

Mathius thank you for all your effort in helping me. I have a workable
solution by using a second window. I have spent more time on this than I
intended and have certainly used much more of your time than I should.
