Thanks for your message, Paolo (and for the nice macro where I copied
from ;); very interesting the base 10 to base 26 number conversion to
get the correct column letter! ).

AAMOF, In the meantime I found out what was preventing the correct
creation of the range: there was already a range named 'last_bal'
although it referenced a null value.
Now I'm stucked at the way I can get rid of the range if it is already
there. In other words, if last_bal already exists (as normally would be
in a running account) it must first be deleted, otherwise the new one
will not be correctly set up and Calc (?, better Basic) will issue an
exception. I could not find an example of how to do that in spite of all
my readings ;( ...
