there is a new seminar paper that attempts to compare MS Access with OOo
Base (2.3). In OOo Base in addtion to the embedded datatbase, a little
howto shows how to access MySQL (and by extension any database
possessing an ODBC and/or JDBC driver).
One thing that may be interesting too are little nutshell examples in
the appendix written in OOo Basic, ooRexx and Java, allowing for
comparing the different languages and how to use them to interact with
OOo Base.
