you can get the screen size via the undocumented
com.sun.star.awt.DisplayAccess
http://svn.services.openoffice.org/opengrok/xref/Current%20(trunk)/vcl/source/components/display.cxx
I've CCed you with an ODT attached showing how to use it.

By the way, you can submit a documentation issue for making this service
available, and please also ask them to use new service constructors - IMHO it
has no sense to use css.beans.XPropertySet and css.beans.XPropertySetInfo in
this case (all properties are read-only); so getter methods are better (and
less error prone than css.beans.XPropertySet).

There may even be a code issue: WorkArea and ScreenArea return the same on
Linux (tested on Fedora 10 and Ubuntu Intrepid).

I'm not sure if you have to submit this to the framework project (toolkit/awt
module belongs to Carsten) or gsl (this is inside the vcl module:
vcl/source/components/).
