Configuring MySQL for DBD

Is there a particular reason we aren't using mysql_config script to  
figure out various settings required to compile/link against MySQL?  
Version 4.1 and above (what the driver is designed for) ship the script.

It could save a lot of guessing in the M4 script...
PS. We can do similar things for PostgreSQL as well, with pg_config.
