I have noticed that some of the other Tigris projects (Subversion and
Subclipse) instead get their bugs on a mailing list and after the bug is
discussed there, it is entered in the bug database. The stated reason
for this is to keep the bug database clean.
Considering this and comparing the processes, I still think that our way
of doing it, as correctly described by Tom here, is the more efficient
one and I think we should stick to that.
On the other hand it feels like most of the postings to our users'
mailing list are users reporting problems (and answers by Tom and Bob).
I think their relentless work with urging the users' to create issues by
explaining why, as seen in Tom's formulation above, is commendable. I
don't think we could be more explicit or efficient in discouraging the
use of the mailing list for bug reporting without the risk of being
perceived as discouraging in this.
Another observation:
Getting every user to feel that we are taking his problems seriously
without affecting the efficiency of the development work is a big
challenge. By not having a separate complaints department (or support
organization) this challenge is put on every developer increasing their
work-load. I am grateful that we have persons in the project that can
handle this so well. I'd hope that we would be able to attract more
users to help in this and looking at it from this perspective, any
answering of question on the users' mailing list or looking through
issuezilla for finding duplicates and things that are not really
problems, would be helping the project.
I think I will, from now on, consider all applications for an Observer
role in the any of the argouml projects as someone volunteering to be
part of this and attempt to write welcoming mails explaining what they
can do for the project.
