Thomas - Thanks for the pointer. I don't follow AndroMDA as closely as I
probably should (principally because they use forums instead of email). I'm
surprised that AndroMDA is dropping UML 1.4 support. Doesn't seem like it
will make for a very smooth transition.

Matthias (AndroMDA project lead) talks about accepting "EMF XMI" for the new
version of AndroMDA which also seems a little unusual. Hopefully he
actually means "UML 2.x XMI (as implemented by EMF)." If they are using a
proprietary metamodel layered directly on Eclipse's EMF, we're going to have
a hard time producing models they can use. On the other hand, if they stick
with the standards and accept UML 2.1+ models, then we should be able to
produce native models that are acceptable to them when our UML 2.1.1 work is
done. And, of course, we'll provide a migration path from UML 1.4 to UML
2.1.1.

I think AndroMDA 4 is still a ways away from being useful for end users, but
it is definitely worth watching.

Tom

Subject: [argouml-dev] next generation AndroMDA and ArgoUML

Hi,

this came before my eyes in the AndroMDA forum: (btw, why don't we have a
forum, it's better than a mailing list?)

http://galaxy.andromda.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4705
<http://galaxy.andromda.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4705&highlight=argouml>

It talks about how it could be made possible to work with MDR based UML
tools, especially with ArgoUML, since AndroMDA 4 uses EMF.

Background:
AndroMDA 3.x is a MDA tool that need to closely work together with a UML
modeling tool that supports Netbeans MDR as the model repository. The
AndroMDA community prefers MagicDraw, but ArgoUML is among the tools that is
well suited to use for AndroMDA. One big drawback behind MagicDraw is, that
currently you cannot use ArgoUML to model cartridges (the modules that
control the code generation, e.g. BPM4Struts or EJB), because of
http://argouml.tigris.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=4077. Also there's a
problem (and a workaround) to load UML profiles for easier modeling, because
of http://argouml.tigris.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=3571 (but I consider
this an AndroMDA issue how they build the profile).

All this just for information.

Regards,
Thomas Neustupny
