Tangentially related to the Eclipse discussion is a little tidbit that I learned at the Sun Developer Days a month or two ago. Sun is dropping MDR from NetBeans as of NetBeans 6.0 (crrently at beta 2 and getting close to release). I also have been in discussions with some NetBeans engineers and they have confirmed that Sun has no future plans for MDR. The project has been suspended for several months, and all MDR staff engineers have been reassigned to other projects. Instead of the NetBeans Metadata Repostory (MDR), there's a new core implementation which is used for things like refactoring Java code, etc. I haven't had time to look into this in any more detail other than to confirm that it appears to be true. Of course this doesn't affect our use of MDR for UML 1.4, but it's a clear signal that we'll never see any more enhancements to MDR (like MOF 2.x support). I couldn't agree more. Sadly, MDR has no future. FYI, I have been talking to the NetBeans UML team, and they are planning to use EMF to replace their current model repository. There is a possibility that I may be able to facillitate some useful cooperation between ArgoUML and NetBeans UML, if I can identify sufficient common common functionality that both projects require to be wrapped around EMF. I will be looking investigating the NetBeans UML requirements while looking at their source next month. When I do, I will report what I find. cheers, roy
