But to answer you question for now. The current implementation of sequence diagrams have been very problematic. We've been working on a new implementation that is still being tested. As you've been checking out from subversion into eclipse according to the cookbook instructions then you should be able to take the sequence diagram module whose psf is available from here and then run with the launcher that comes with that download.
