We seem to use the term module and plugin interchangeably. Could we
settle on one. I would suggest plugin as it tends to fit eclipse
terminology better.
My usual reply to naming discussions is: "Synonyms cost money". My
experience in professional life surely confirms this statement.
However, there is also a human factor: people love to use new exciting names
for old things. Maybe this gives then the feeling to be creative, and helps
them to motivate. Or it is a community feeling: The ones that know and use
the new name are on the train of progress, the others are left behind.
Following the lead of Eclipse is surely stepping on the train of progress.
Hmmm... the human factor may prevail.

Hence, my vote is to stick to what we have: modules.
What sounds better than plugging in a module?
