More color is good. The current scheme is far too monochromatic. I think yellow is the only additional color to the base background and foreground colors.
Having said that, I think adding color should be part of a general design scheme, not something specific to a single part of the UI such as the diagram toolbar. Designs work best of they are well integrated which makes this a non-trivial task. It's also a task best suited for a designer as opposed to an engineer.
