I am not smart but....

Take a look at GEF and the class called JSplitGraphPane. You'll see
usage of that demonstrated in GEFDemo. That creates a split window
where the editor pane is duplicated in each. If you look at how that
class works you can do similar.

There has been some attempt to use a similar technique to create a
birdseye view in ArgoUML but the work is not complete yet.
