I don't know anything of spring, there are many frameworks we could adopt. The recent talk has been of aligning with eclipse RCP.
Deviation - I don't know much about the explorer architecture either and I'm wondering what the difficulties might be there in moving to UML2. I can imagine if there are coded rules that they might be fairly hard wired to UML1.4. Is there anyway the explorer could be driven by some XML definition based on the metamodel (similar to how Christian and myself are developing the replacement property panels)?
