Hello Bob, I think the main idea here is that the work you are developing in the core ArogoUML will improve the design of the project as a whole. This will facilitate the development and better organize the project internally. The ArgoUML-SPL focuses on the end user, so the internal organization of the project in development time perhaps is not a concerns of this users. As described in our mission project page: "Our ultimate goal is to Deliver the version of ArgoUML end-users where can remove (or add) features from the system codebase.". We are always focusing on end users.
Our idea is to always to do the merges between our sources with the sources of the main project, so we can offer customized versions of the current version of ArgoUML. Unfortunately we still stopped in version 0.28.1 for lack of time and people to help. Another development stream is necessary at this point to demonstrate the viability of the idea from what we want to do. In future, if the project show yourself as viable and really interesting, maybe we can offer this functionality as an extra point for ArgoUML. What do you think? The ideas surrounding the creation of Software Product Lines are often confused even, and this kind of discussion is great for us to see things from different angles. I hope that you continue with these discussions to mature more and more the project.
