I would think such a tool should preferably operate without any developer input but could then be tuned.
I'd envision something that could both test a) usage of the product to see what classes are used the most at runtime (manipulating bytecode in the way that tools like Cobertura do could gather this data) b) test subversion to see what classes are modified most and combine those results with some weighting When viewing the results of the above the seasoned developwe may spot anomalies and then choose to remove items that are not relevant (for argouml that would almost certainly be the critics). But this would be after a first run of the tool rather than making assumptions beforehand.
