There have been a number of issues reported recently that highlight a long-standing issue with ArgoUML (and Java apps on the Mac in general). The problem is that the current approach to packaging the app results in an artifact that requires an old version of Java 6 built specifically for the Mac by Apple.
Since Apple no longer supports this, I was wondering if we might look at the Java packager <https://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/technotes/guides/deploy/self-contained-packaging.html> as a potential solution? The packager creates an EXE on Windows, and creates a DMG on Mac OS X and a deb on Linux. It also bundles the appropriate version of the JRE with the app. The packager can either be executed from the command line (as described in the link above) or using a maven plugin. This would insure that users won't have to deal with installing Java and setting path variables, but instead have an application that for all intents and purposes acts like any other native application.
