For overlays as per
https://maven.apache.org/plugins/maven-war-plugin/overlays.html default target
path is webapp root structure [webapp/src/main/webapp]. Now when maven war
plugin was getting executed than overlays were combined in
{project.build.directory} as default outputDirectory for war plugin is
{project.build.directory} . I did not see any generated files in
webapp/src/main/webapp.
