I have found that if the metadata is human readable then marking up files is 
by far the simplest solution. At some point you have to associate metadata 
with classes - usually config files. But they are usually far more complex 
than marking up .java files.

I know people who barely know what an EJB descriptor looks like but develope 
them all the time via xdoclet ;)
