FWIW, during the James v2.1 timeframe, Peter Goldstein and I did a lot of
memory tuning, and I've done more since. Can't do anything about basic JVM
costs, and there are some things in Avalon/Phoenix that take up too much
memory (primarily related to the XML parser, IIRC), but it takes less memory
than before.
