I think we are building the fundamental components as you already know. Location transparent registration, component, and dependency resolution through ldap (referals) is huge.
I agree whole heartedly with this next step - the progression is natural in distributed environments.
I just (5 minutes ago) read an artical that seemed like a compelling way to accomplish it. It takes advantage of the JSR 160 (JMX Remoting) code, JMX, and JINI. The artical is in the Sep. Java Developer's Journal (no link at this time).
Granted that there are patent issues with JINI, but the results are that you have a remotely accessible manageable system with a self-healing network. Perhaps some concepts can be pulled from that...
