Hi, I'm all for following the Linux model. Is it not how the httpd versions work? I'd like to know how other projects do this. It would be nice to have an ASF recommended approach so all projects could be consistent this way. Something this dry should be done by the book.
I would like to follow the Linux model since people know what to expect of it and it's a popular scheme that works. By looking at any project using this model there are inferences that can automatically be made regarding the quality of the software. Plus if it works for a massive operating system like Linux it should work for us. In general I'd rather not invent our own mechanism for this process. The fact that our users will be able to interpret the quality level of the release by the version numbers is a big positive! +1 for following the Linux model to the T.
