Fail to build from fresh git checkout

Here's a sample of what I did to repro the bug:
> git clone git://github.com/apache/avro.git
> cd avro
> ./build.sh dist
+ for target in '"$@"'
+ case "$target" in
+ mkdir -p build
+ rm -rf build/avro-src-1.4.0-SNAPSHOT
+ svn export --force . build/avro-src-1.4.0-SNAPSHOT
svn: '.' is not a working copy
the hack solution would probably to check for the existence of diretories .svn
or .git and execute the appropriate command.
