I have some updates.  If there is another RC for 1.5.0, I'd like to get them in.

If not, the javadoc changes can go in 1.5.1 in another ticket (minor, fix some 
broken <i> close tags and add some minor clarification).
There is one code change in ValidatingEncoder.configure(Encoder) to return 
itself for method chaining -- all other Decoders and Encoders with configure() 
methods do.
We could live with that one inconsistency -- I'm not sure it justifies changing 
the API later.
