I think the specification should really separate the canonicalization and the 
hashing stuff. Enumerating various ways of hashing the result of the canonical 
form doesn't really seem necessary since in any of the cases you have listed 
you could just as easily use a monotonically increasing number for the schema 
-- as long as your central repository or other schema provider lets you look up 
the number with the canonical schema text. This was the design I ultimately 
went with for Avrobase on top of MySQL since it is easy to lookup a row by a 
value of a column.
