Attached an updated patch (AVRO-1288-2.patch) that factors codecs into 
pluggable classes, adds deflate support for writing as well as reading, and 
adds tests. I've tested with Ruby 1.8.7 and 1.9.3, and tested interop with 
Java, C and Python.

I think this is ok to be committed now — would appreciate review.
