Here's a patch that does roughly what you suggest. I used a name rather than a
class, so that the reader can use the schema to see if a custom encoding is
needed.
BTW I think AVRO-1469 is related. Would the approach here satisfy the
requirements of AVRO-1469?

I had a look, but I don't think that's a requirement for Hive for example.
