Code looks good. I agree that it needs javadoc.
I worry that if we only deprecate in 1.8.0 that we might be stuck with the
exposed Jackson API for a long time. We could perhaps instead release a 1.7.8
that includes the deprecations (plus other bugfixes) then a 1.8.0 with the
incompatible change (and no public Jackson)? 1.8.0 will be our last chance for
incompatible changes for some time.
