Unfortunately, I haven't been following this from the beginning, so I'm not
sure what the changes are for the improvements that Steven posted. However,
since [~jcnnghm] can validate that the validation lookup table and direct
access to _writer are an improvement and they make sense, let's start by
getting just those changes in a patch. Then we can look at optimizing the
numeric deserialization.
