To keep a patch small, we can break it across multiple issues. I'd rather do 
that than commit changes that should be removed later. To avoid regressions, we 
should add tests until we are confident we can make changes safely. Otherwise, 
we're relying on a "don't touch it" strategy for correctness.

I don't see a need for the accessors, but I could be convinced otherwise. I 
just haven't been convinced there's a case that justifies the use.
